Eisen Lab Open Science
We are committed to the principle that everything we produce in the lab - papers, data, software - should be immediately freely available for anything to download and use.
- Open Access: We publish all research papers that are the primary products of the lab (i.e. ones where we make the decision where to publish) in open access journals that make all of their papers immediately freely available. You can read, download and reuse all of our papers, and we encourage you to do so.
- Open Data: We make all of our data freely available. Science means more than just doing experiments and publishing the results. It means enabling people to repeat your work, and more importantly, to take it beyond where you took it. Thus is is critical that scientists make all of their data available for people to build on and reuse. We always made our data available to colleagues without restriction.
- Open Software: We provide source code for all of our software for people to use and build on without restriction.
- Open Intellectual Property: We believe that the ideas and discoveries made my publicly-funded scientists - especially those working at public universities - should belong to the public, and believe that restrictions on the use of our ideas, methods, reagents or anything else produced by the lab impede scientific progress. Therefore we never apply for patents on work, and never require that people sign agreements to use things we produce.
We hope that our colleagues, especially those who use our open papers, open data, open software and open intellectual property, will play them forward by doing the same with the work of their labs too.
